Heavenly friendship

In St. Paul’s Rock Creek Cemetery in Washington, D.C. stands the gray marble ornamented-top tablet of Thomas Sunderland with an interesting epitaph that attempt’s to comfort those grieving.

To the memory of

departed this life

in the city of Washington D. C.

on the 12th of October 1827

in the 40th year of his age.

Mourning friends refrain from grief,

For he that wounds can send relief:

Your Heavenly Father’s pleasure ‘tis

To take your friends and make them his.
