W. H. RINEHART
BORN IN CARROLL Co. Md. 1825
DIED AT ROME ITALY. 1874
William Henry Rinehart was born September 13, 1825 and died October 28, 1874. Rinehart was a classic American sculptor of note and buried in the Green Mount Cemetery in Baltimore, Maryland. Rinehart was buried under a sculpture of his own.
The figure atop his monument is the Greek mythological figure Endymion. Endymion was the beautiful shepherd who was loved by the Moon goddess, Selene (or Artemis). Noted for his beauty, Zeus granted eternal sleep and youth to Endymion and allowed Selene to visit him nightly.
John Keats immortalized Endymion in an 1818 poem:
“A thing of beauty is a joy for ever:
Its loveliness increases; it will never
Pass into nothingness; but still will keep
A bower quiet for us, and a sleep
Full of sweet dreams, and health, and quiet breathing.”
